Marta Vukovic (PhD candidate, University of Vienna) presented her paper titled “(Un)conditional Support? How Disagreement Affects Perceived Relevance of Free Speech for Democracy in Europe” at the 10th Annual Conference of the Austrian Political Association held in Vienna on 28-29 November. The paper examines whether individuals find freedom of speech as important for democracy when they disagree with the content of the speech as when they agree. It builds on research conducted in the framework of AUTHLIB using results from an experiment undertaken in seven European countries.
