The Berlin office of The German Marshall Fund of the United States is seeking an energetic and detail-oriented intern, interested in the state of liberal democracy in the European Union and in public policy. The internship will provide the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge about the operation of an international research project and the role of the foundation in it and offers an ideal opportunity to acquire substantive professional experience for those interested in a career in policy analysis and/or public policy in an international environment.

 

Title: Intern, Engaging Central Europe / AUTHLIB project, Winter 2025 (full-time, 40hrs/week)
Location: Berlin, Germany (in-person)

The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) strengthens transatlantic cooperation on regional, national, and global challenges and opportunities in the spirit of the Marshall Plan. GMF does this by supporting individuals and institutions working in the transatlantic sphere, by convening leaders and members of the policy and business communities, by contributing research and analysis on transatlantic topics, and by providing exchange opportunities to foster renewed commitment to the transatlantic relationship.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Support copy/editing for team members and occasionally translations or transcriptions
  • Adding new content to project website and social media (training will be provided)
  • Assisting in event planning and event implementation
  • Supporting the program staff in a variety of tasks such as conducting background research on current political events and trends (EU-focused, democratization/autocratization-related themes)
  • Various administrative tasks
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Enrolled undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in Political Science or other related fields
  • Strong interest in democracy, democratization, autocratization research
  • Sound understanding of the functioning of democratic political systems
  • Interest in communication of academic and policy research
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Fluency in English required, native speaker level is a plus
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, experience with WordPress is a plus
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
  • Great organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to work well under pressure
  • Available for event support in the evening (1-2 per month)
  • Based in Berlin or able to relocate for the period of the internship

Preferred starting date:               Feb 2025
Duration:                                      3 months
Compensation:                             450 EUR/month gross
