AUTHLIB Midterm Factsheet
The AUTHLIB research project, now at its halfway mark, has made significant strides in understanding the dynamics of illiberalism, authoritarianism, and populism across Europe. The team has laid a strong foundation by refining these core concepts and exploring advanced computational text analysis methods. Researchers have focused on seven key countries—Austria, Czechia, France, Hungary, Italy, Poland, and the UK—conducting both qualitative and quantitative studies on political parties and their policies.
The project’s key achievements to date include the development of a survey to gauge public attitudes toward illiberalism and the creation of the AUTHLIB Index, which ranks parties based on their illiberal tendencies. Comparative analyses have produced reports into the policies of illiberals in power in areas like immigration and citizenship, education and culture, social policies, and foreign policy. The project also started to map cross-border collaborations among illiberal organizations.
As the project moves into its second phase, upcoming efforts will include a normative analysis of state intervention limits to protect liberal democracy and the integration of research findings into a comprehensive visual map. These results will also be shared through mini-public discussions and an e-learning platform aimed at secondary education, ensuring broad dissemination of AUTHLIB’s findings.
